dramaturgy

I am available to hire as a freelance dramaturg, to support all your writing needs!

I specialise in structural changes, and editing scripts to fully explore the writer’s story. I am also experienced in researching supporting materials to allow for greater world-building, and helping writers shape their script for pitches to directors, producers and arts organisations

I offer the following services:

consultation (free)

  • A fifteen minute Zoom meeting, where we discuss your script, its themes, characters and story. We also discuss you as a writer, your background, the reason(s) behind you choosing to write this particular script, and any future life you might like to see it have

  • There is no obligation to proceed with a Script Report following this Consultation

  • Consultations may also be done via telephone or email

script report (£50)

  • I read the text, and using the information from our consultation, produce a report analysing your script

  • The report will focus on dramatic structure, character beats, and clarity from an audience’s perspective

  • I will also offer my own suggestions as to any further texts or research you might wish to look at to aid your writing

  • The aim of the report is to provide an outside critical eye to your script, that focuses less on details and more on the ‘big picture’

  • I would suggest a Script Report is useful for works that are at least their second draft

script meeting (£60)

  • An hour long Zoom meeting where we dissect your script, highlight any strengths, and look at any problems

  • A Script Report is also provided with this service

  • I will also offer my suggestions as to the next physical stage of your script, including how you might pitch to directors, producers and arts organisations

  • Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all meetings are to take place via Zoom

testimonials

Rob was the dramaturg on my play Time and Tide which he later went on to direct at Park Theatre. He was a thoughtful and thorough reader of my work and gave practical and insightful feedback on how to strengthen the story and structure of my play
— James McDermott, playwright
Rob’s dramaturgy was extremely efficient and helpful. A quick, but very thorough, 24hr turnaround time. The notes Rob made on my play ‘Runts’ were detailed and constructive. He also gave me some great advice on how I could move forward with the show.
— Sarah Day, DaybyDay Productions
I worked with Rob on my play Cuttings and it stands as one of the most brilliant creative experiences and relationships I have had. He approaches the text with a forensics lens; questioning, investigating, challenging, pushing and enriching the script with each reading. He mines to find the true drama within the story while having a very keen ear for comedy.

Equally, which is a great testament to the man as well as the professional, he’s deeply kind and unrelentingly supportive. I always found he understood how exposing it is to share you work to outside eyes, and that sensitivity was never lost throughout the whole journey from first reading to London run.

I learnt a great deal about storytelling from Rob and see him as one of my most trusted collaborators.
— Ollie George Clark, playwright
I was blown away by Rob’s attention to detail and clever suggestions. Throughout the consultation I felt as though Rob truly cared about the project and there was no rush to get through his long (helpful) list of notes. He began by working through technical notes and then dived into all his brilliant ideas for expanding and re organising the play. I couldn’t recommend Rob enough and I feel excited to get working on my r&d draft ready for workshops!
— Millie Gaston, actor and playwright
I was very impressed with Rob’s attention to detail, analysis, ideas and constructive suggestions for improvement for my play, which I’m sure will help a great deal for future drafts.
— Olu Alakija, playwright
Rob provided really detailed and insightful notes on my script, including several aspects and interpretations I hadn’t thought of, along with suggestions on narrative, character motivations, and themes - all of which were amazingly helpful. He was positive and supportive throughout, something which I, as a fairly inexperienced writer, greatly appreciated, and he was genuinely interested in my script and background. He also provided some awesome recommendations for other plays and films to check out, as well as some companies who have produced similar plays to mine. I wasn’t entirely sure what to do with this script when I first sent it to Rob, but his enthusiasm and feedback revived my belief in it.
— Matthew Wixey, playwright
Having done a workshop with Rob, and seen a few plays he’s directed, Rob is ace! Really puts his finger on the main issues and gets rid of the crap. Leaving a really in focus and sharp result.
— Anthony Bardos, playwright
I was fortunate enough to have Rob do dramaturgy on my script (full-length play) earlier this year. He gave me thorough notes for the entirety of the script and also sent me an in-depth discussion document which posed questions in regard to structure and tension in the plot. His feedback was both encouraging and honest and helped me enormously in developing the script to where it is today. Undoubtably it was his feedback that helped me elevate my script to a point I was confident enough to submit it to theatres and competitions. Rob is helpful, engaging and extremely supportive and I would highly recommend anyone to get Rob on board and make use of his dramaturgy services
— Louisa Sexton, actor and playwright
